How sustainable are America's 50 biggest companies? We checked the evidence.

We scored all 50 of America's biggest companies on their environmental record, out of 100, with every source shown. Not one reached 60, the score for a company that's doing well.

We scored all 50 on their environmental record, out of 100. Not one reached 60, the score we use for a company that's doing well.

What we did

SINK is an independent sustainability score. We score every company out of 100 using the same ten questions:

  • how much it emits, and whether that's falling
  • how clean its energy is
  • what targets it has set
  • its effect on nature, water and waste
  • how openly it reports
  • its record on controversies

The evidence comes from each company's own reports and filings, and from independent sources such as regulators, campaign groups and the press. Every source is linked on the company's page, so you can check our work. Companies can't pay to change their score.

How to read a score

The Fortune 50 is the list of the 50 biggest companies in the US by revenue. It includes Walmart, Amazon, Apple, the big banks and the big oil companies.

What we found

1. Not one reached 60.

When we published, the highest was Elevance Health, a health insurer, followed by Meta. Elevance Health scores 49/100 today and Meta 46/100. The average across all 50 is 31.

2. Oil and refining sit at the bottom.

Exxon Mobil18
Valero Energy18
Marathon Petroleum17
Phillips 6617
Chevron16

Most of the emissions linked to these companies come from burning the fuel they sell. Our score counts those emissions, not just the ones from their own sites.

3. The banks leave out their biggest number.

A bank's own offices produce very little carbon. Its real footprint is the companies it lends to and invests in, which is usually far bigger. 13 of the 50 are banks, insurers or other finance companies that don't publish a full figure for that. We don't let a missing number count in a company's favour, so until they publish it, our method applies a fixed deduction. These 13 average 29 today.

4. Some of the best-known names score low.

Walmart30
Amazon27
Tesla23

Tesla sells electric cars, but we score the company, not the product: what it emits making them, its targets, how openly it reports and its record.

What this tells us

Size makes it harder. The more a company emits in total, the bigger the deduction, and these are some of the largest companies in the world. But size isn't the whole story. Each company's page shows exactly which questions it lost points on, and what evidence would change its score.

Scores can go down as well as up. When companies publish new reports, we score them again.

Fortune 50: the 50 largest US companies by revenue on the Fortune 500 list. Scored in October 2026. Elevance Health and UnitedHealth carry a limited-evidence note because fewer independent sources cover them. Berkshire Hathaway is classed as a financial company, as it is commonly classified; its page explains why.
